There are two kinds of cicadas: periodical cicadas and annual cicadas.

The differences lie in their life cycles and patterns of emergence from underground.

Another important distinction is the difference between cicadas and locusts.

While cicadas are often mislabeled as locusts, these two species of insects arenotone and the same.

Unlike locusts, cicadas are notconsidered pests.

They do not swarm and are not destructive to the environment.

Thats because these two cicada broods do not overlap in geographical range to any significant extent.

So what about Illinois?

As it turns out, the two broods are expected to divide the state in half with minimal overlap.

Brood XIII will be primarily in the north, while Brood XIX will be mainly in the south.

Visit theUSDA’s Forest Service websiteto see a map of exactly where the brood’s will make an appearance.

So sit back, relax, and enjoy the sounds of summer as the cicadas start to sing.
