This reduces disease risk and promotes fruit set.

Pruning an avocado tree correctly for height takes three or four years.

Pruning too much all at once stresses the tree and reduces the crop.

Use pruning shears to cut the branches of an avocado tree.

If the tree branches are too thick for pruners, use a lopper or a handsaw.

They wont bear fruit and suck energy out of the tree.

Clip them off on sight, down to the soil line.

A node is a bump on the stem with special plant tissue that puts out new branches and leaves.

New growth emerges from the node after you prune off the top of the sapling.

Choose the Right Variety

Avocado trees tend to be broad-spreading trees.

When grown in a container, it adjusts its size to fit the pot.

A good pick for growing in a container is the Wurtz avocado, sometimes called Little Cado.
