In the development stage the recipe is created based on the needs of the publication.

The recipe that was developed may sound great, but it needs to work.

During the taste panel the tester first explains how the recipe was made and any issues encountered.

Then everyone tastes the dish and offers feedback and discussion to improve the recipe.

1928:The Better Homes & Gardens Test Kitchen is founded.

(Before that, recipes were tested in the household editor’s home.)

1933:Better Homes & Gardens announces the Prize Tested Recipes contest, reportedly the longest-running recipe contest ever.

1941:My Better Homes & Gardens Cook Book’s popular red-plaid cover appears.

1953:The bestseller becomes theBetter Homes & Gardens New Cook Bookand features a slightly revised plaid cover.

1979:The Test Kitchen gets a makeover.

2004:Sales of theBetter Homes & Gardens New Cook Bookreach almost 37.5 million.
