Here are eight kinds of trees that should not be pruned in spring.
There is also less canopy available to photosynthesize and feed the tree.
It is better to prune thesetrees when dormantin late winter.
Bleeders
Some trees bleed a lot of sap if pruned in spring.
Bleeders include beech, birch, elm, hornbeam, maple, walnut, willow, and yellowwood.
The bleeding sap does not harm the tree, but it can be unsightly.
If you have a species prone to bleeding and wish to avoid it, prune trees in summer instead.
Examples includecherry, crabapple,lilac,plum,redbud, andserviceberry.
Prune within one month of petal drop, which may be late spring or early summer.
However, some gardeners prune evergreens to encourage bushier growth.
